Brooklyn Young Democrats 2011 Election Nominees and More…

Just a brief reminder, we will be having our next meeting, which will also serve as our elections, on Wednesday, February 23, at Bethel Baptist Church (265 Bergen Street) at 7:30pm.
The candidates for office are as follows:

BYLAW III: ElectionsSection 1Notice of elections must be publicized at least 2 weeks in advance of the date of elections.
Section 2All candidates for election may give a speech upon their nomination.
Section 3Voting on changes to the Constitution and Bylaws shall precede voting for officers.
Section 4
- All Executive Board candidates will be required to provide to the current Executive Board a statement of candidacy that must include, but is not limited to, his or her name, address at which he or she is registered to vote, and date of birth by a date determined by the current Executive Board.
- The current Executive Board shall verify that the candidate is a registered Democrat that is registered to vote in Kings County, provided that the candidate is 18 years of age or older yet has not yet reached the age of 36
- An exceptions to section 4.2 shall be made for students attending a college or university in Brooklyn, provided that a proof of residency is provided to the current Executive Board
- Prior to the election the current Executive Board shall provide the membership with a list of candidates and changes to the Constitution and Bylaws in order to provide ample time for consideration by the membership
Section 5Elections shall be governed by Robert’s Rules of Order.BYLAW IV: VacanciesShould a vacancy in any Executive Board position other than President occur, the Executive Board shall choose a replacement to fill the position for the remainder of the term.
BYLAW V: Amendments
Section 1
Amendments to these bylaws must be submitted in writing to the chapter President and chapter Secretary at least two weeks (14 days) prior to the meeting at which the amendment will be considered. The President is obligated to place the amendment on the agenda for that meeting. The amendment will be considered approved if a simple majority of both the Executive Board and the general body (in attendance) vote in favor of the amendment.
Section 2Amendments to these bylaws may only be adopted after an official general body meeting held after an official Executive Board meeting at which the amendment was adopted.
Section 3Amendments shall become effective immediately after the adjournment of the meeting at which they were adopted.

So, it has come to be that time of year. As dictated by our constitution and bylaws, we have to have our (first) officer elections!
We will be conducting our election proceedings at Bethel Baptist Church, 265 Bergen St on February 23 at 7:30 pm.
The positions available are President, Executive Vice-President, Regional Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. There are Regional Vice President positions available: Northern Brooklyn, Central Brooklyn, and Southern Brooklyn); the eligibility for running for the positions are determined by which Assembly District in which you live, work, or attend school. To find out which region you fall into, please check the map of the regions on http://www.brooklynyds.com/about-us/regions/.
If you are interested in running for a position, all we ask that you do is fill out the embedded form and questionnaire on http://www.brooklynyds.com/misc/2011-brooklyn-young-democrats-officer-elections/.
Before the elections, we will send out an email listing the candidates and their answers to the questionnaire.
In order to vote in this election, you must be a dues paying member that has attended one previous meeting within the last year. If you wish to check that you have been at at least one previous meeting, please go to http://www.brooklynyds.com/misc/eligibility-lookup/ and fill out the embedded database look-up form. Our dues, as per our bylaws, are set at $5, but we ask that you give an additional $5 (for a grand total of $10).

The Young Democrats of America will be having their 2011 Winter Meeting will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from February 25 – 27, 2011. Regular registration will then open and remain open until February 11, 2011 and can be done online at https://yda.wiredforchange.com/o/720/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=13240. At that time pre-registration will close. After February 11, 2011, you may only register on-site for a fee of $75.00.

As we go into our first full year as an officially chartered young democrats chapter, we need to start focusing on what type of chapter we will be: what we will do, advocate, teach, etc. However, we cannot start to build that framework without your input. That is why we ask that you go to http://www.brooklynyds.com/events/were-open-for-new-ideas/ and submit your ideas in the comment box at the bottom of the page. If you wish to get notifications about further responses and/or you want to start a dialogue with other people that also submit ideas, please check the box where it says “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail.”
We will be having our elections on February 23, 2011. The positions that you can run for are President, Executive Vice President, Northern Brooklyn Regional Vice President, Central Brooklyn Regional Vice President, Southern Brooklyn Regional Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The requirements to be eligible to run and/or vote in our elections is that you must have paid your dues and have been to one previous meeting in the past year. Our dues are $5/year/member, however, an extra $5 donation is suggested (bringing the dues up to a whopping $10). Please pay your dues at our next meeting.
Once the details regarding our elections are finalized, the details will be emailed to all of you and posted on our website.
